Lowa Vertex GTX Hiking Boot - Womens

The Lowa Vertex GTX hiking boot utilizes Lowa's solid engineering and Gore-Tex materials to create this lightweight, waterproof, breathable masterpiece. The Vibram Vertex rubber sole has a non-slip universal profile. The thermo-plastic cuff is an anatomical and asymetyrical cuff that aligns itself with the actual axis of the ankle and lower leg. It is there to prevent ankle injuries. It is the first of it's kind in the world of hiking boots. Says Backpacker in the March 2004 Gear Guide, “Old school: The only way to get support is with big boots. New school: Combine innovative design with lightweight material, and go to the head of the class." The women's boot is built from Lowa's women's specific last.

Lowa Vertex
I love Lowa boots; they fit my feet like gloves and the Vertex was no exception. They have bedroom slipper comfort right out of the box. I do, however, have two major complaints. 1. They are billed as a backpacking boot. They would only work well on a trail. They just aren't rugged enough to survive many hours of talus scrambling. Too many seams. 2. They are billed as waterproof. When I put my foot (briefly) into a swollen Sierra stream (water barely over the foot part of the boot -- and I had gaiters on) the water came oozing into the boot from all around the foot section. I thought the entire purpose of Gore-Tex boots was their "wonderful" waterproof feature. My old leather Lowa Scouts perform many times better upon immersion into water. At least then my feet had a significant chance of staying dry. When I took off the boot the toe portion of both socks was soaked! Good thing I was on a day trip.

Training Tips

An efficient long distance running stride will have you landing on your heal first and rolling to the front of your toes.

One of the most mentally toughening things you can do as a runner who trains daily is to add a morning run into your routine.  This means you are doing two runs a day.  The morning run is simply more of a mental challenge then anything else.

Have two pairs of running shoes, especially if you live in a wet climate.  Consider replacing your shoes no later than 500 miles into the life of the shoes.

Proper hydration for a run includes drinking 30 - 45 minutes before you start and about a cup every 10 - 15 minutes while running.
