The North Face Heat Exchanger Balaclava

The North Face Heat Exchanger Balaclava uses QX-Tec technology to warm and moisten the air you breathe in, which decreases your perception of the cold and helps prevent the dreaded cold weather lung burn. You wrap yourself in warm clothing, but you keep on breathing cold air. The North Face Heat Exchanger Balaclava uses QX-Tec technology to warm and moisten the air you breathe in, which decreases your perception of the cold and helps prevent the dreaded cold weather lung burn. The Heat Exchanger is still a Balaclava, too, so it keeps your whole head warm in brutally cold conditions.

Breakthrough Balaclava
Yes it looks goofy and ninja like but this thing works. You no longer get all the moisture on your face or stuck to the material. I truly believe this saves energy because it heats the air as it comes in making your body burn less energy by having to warm the air. A must own for any outdoor winter enthusiast.

It works but not as comfortable as I want
The balaclava is warm at 0F so I was happy. It doesn't cover the nose though and I would want that in the next one. The heat exchanger is awkward. It really doesnt fit well. It placed between the balaclava and your mouth. You breathe into it and it warms the air. No real way to store it. Seems like a plastic bag is the best. I had thought it would have been an insert into the balaclava. That would have made more sense. I haven't found anything better yet though.

Training Tips

When buying a new pair of running shoes, bring your old ones with you.  You will get a better fit if you know if you supinate or pronate.

Heart monitors are useful for knowing when you are in the right zone for your training efforts.  If you understand what your maximum heart rate is, you can set up your monitor to beep at you when you exceed the high or low range of your heart rate for the type of workout you are doing.

Cross training gives your body a chance to recover while still exercising.  If yesterday has a hard run day up and down hills, then today's bicycle ride gives your aching knees a well deserved break.

Anaeroic threshold is when lactic acid starts to build up in your body as your muscles are not getting the oxygen they require.  This threshold is typically expressed as a percentage of your VO2 max - the amount of oxygen per kilogram of weight that a person can use in converting fuel to energy. Elite athletes threshold might be as high as 90% of VO2 max.
