Arc'teryx Gamma SV Jacket - Men's

The Gamma SV is the best selling jacket that Arc'teryx makes, because this altruistic alpine softshell keeps you covered in versatility. A durable and highly breathable fabrication is cut to move through each season without backing down. Treated for water resistance; the Gamma SV acts equally well as a spring-to-fall outer shell or dead-of-winter mid layer. A practical waist length, with hem mounted drawcord, insures that the Gamma SV will layer well with other garments and won't interfere with a climbing harness or backpack. Handy pocketing stows valuables and keeps digits toasty.

Gamma SV Jacket: Outstanding
Just great in all respects, fit, looks, comfort and warmth. Is very form fitting and is a handsome jacket as well. One of my mainstays in winter, can typically get away wearing this unless there is a deluge, hands down the best in its class, sets the standard but is pricey! Recommended highly.

Holy sweet goodness.
I bought this around the same time as a MHW Alchemy. The Gamma SV fits better, is stretchier, looser in the chest/pits, lighter, and a lot more comfortable. It is a little less abrasion resistant than the Alchemy, and a touch less wind resistant. (Weird, huh? Maybe it's the fit.) They both seem equally rain/water/weather resistant -- I haven't tested them in torrential downpours, but when it sprinkles and snows, both of them are just fine. They both seem about as breathable -- which is, very much so. Comfortable between 45 (zipped all the way!) and 70deg (open all the way!) with a t-shirt and a cotton undershirt. Highly recommended and well worth the asking price. -j

This is the one.
I've tried various flavors of fleece including WindStopper, and this is by far the best and most versatile jacket I've ever owned. It does it all: sheds rain, stops the wind, *breathes* well, good fit. Believe the hype -- this soft shell delivers. This jacket combined with a base layer and a hard shell are all I need to handle anything mother nature cares to serve up when I'm hiking.

Climate-proof, free movement, and warm
Excels in climbing situations or any activity that requires lots of upward/forward arm movement (hanging from ledge, riding a bike, holding the top handrail in the metro), and the sleeves are cut longer to accommodate this. Fits closely at the wrist, there is room in the chest, and it moves well. It tapers to the waist and hangs slightly below the belt for additional coverage. It'll handle most wet conditions, though I haven't put it through any apocalyptic downpours. The Gamma SV may be too warm for non-static activities when it's above 40F. I think the sleeves could be cut a bit shorter--which would not reduce wrist coverage--because they tend to bunch up. Also, I'd like a looser fit at the wrist. I know that this defeats the purpose for a climbing jacket; however, it would be nice during other activities, like hiking/running/backpacking, to be able to pull up your sleeves and have more venting. The Gamma SV is a great jacket, and suitable for urban settings as well.

sensational jacket
In my opinion this is the best softshell jacket there is. It is lightweight, breathable, comfortable, and waterproof. I use it for skiing, snowboarding, sea kayaking, hiking, cycling, and general outdoor use. It's the best!

Training Tips

Heart monitors are useful for knowing when you are in the right zone for your training efforts.  If you understand what your maximum heart rate is, you can set up your monitor to beep at you when you exceed the high or low range of your heart rate for the type of workout you are doing.

Cross training gives your body a chance to recover while still exercising.  If yesterday has a hard run day up and down hills, then today's bicycle ride gives your aching knees a well deserved break.

Anaeroic threshold is when lactic acid starts to build up in your body as your muscles are not getting the oxygen they require.  This threshold is typically expressed as a percentage of your VO2 max - the amount of oxygen per kilogram of weight that a person can use in converting fuel to energy. Elite athletes threshold might be as high as 90% of VO2 max.

Efficient running position allows you to run farther and faster.  Keep the heel raise to a minimum, relax your upper body and hands, keep your upper body poised and quiet.
