The Excellent trail runner or light hiker as long as it won't get muddy. The shoe feels comfortable from the first moment, and keeps dry from the outside and inside. It has only one problem: the "contra grip" sole gives you traction on paths that you can still run (i.e. you land on the heel and jump from the forefoot). But if it goes down hill and becomes slippery, the only "contra" part of the sole is at your heels while the forefoot sole becomes a skate. So you have to glide down, or you try to balance it out on the heels...
Great versatile all around shoe I have worn my new XA Pro XCRs virtually non-stop since I got them. I wear them for 12-14 hours at work where I am on my feet all day and I run in them regularly. Even after the abuse, they remain comfortable even for my flat feet. Highly recommend these to anyone needing a durable sneaker.
These shoes are a gift from God I tried these shoes on a year ago because they were light and waterproof. They were more expensive that I wanted to pay, but they fit my (wide) foot perfectly. They are so light, I don't notice them on. The waterproofing is still holding strong over a year later (while my north face, nike, timberland, and merril gtx trail runners had lost their seal much sooner). I was lucky enough to catch them on sale here and without hesitation bought 5 more pairs. I have a friend who was able to do 1500 miles of the AT on one pair of solomons, I'm curious to see if I can finish all 2163 miles on one pair this summer.
Salomon XA Pro 2 XCR I bought these for my boyfriend, who is training for the Boston Marathon. They're great for winter running. The fit seems true, and he said they've got great support and traction while running.
Excellent product These shoes are excellent, for both, on-road and off-road. I'll buy them again.

Training Tips
Anaeroic threshold is when lactic acid starts to build up in your body as your muscles are not getting the oxygen they require. This threshold is typically expressed as a percentage of your VO2 max - the amount of oxygen per kilogram of weight that a person can use in converting fuel to energy. Elite athletes threshold might be as high as 90% of VO2 max.
Efficient running position allows you to run farther and faster. Keep the heel raise to a minimum, relax your upper body and hands, keep your upper body poised and quiet.

If you want to make progess in your training, join a running group. A commitment to meet on a regular basis with a group of like minded individuals will help you keep your focus.
An efficient long distance running stride will have you landing on your heal first and rolling to the front of your toes.
