Salomon SM Lite Hiking Boot - Men's

The Salomon SM Lite is a versatile boot great for extended trekking in rugged mountainous terrain and glacier hiking. Semi automatic crampon compatible, the SM Lite will take you from trail head to camp, through the approach, and on to the glacier. A quick one pull lacing system only adds to this convenience. Salomon's Contagrip2 sole wears better and is stickier than any out there. This is a great value for the technical features you get. Among Salomon's Mountain Series boots, the SM Lite is the most economical but with virtually all the same features.

SM Lites = True Value
After purchasing the SM Lites I was only able to break them in for a total of 6 hours or so of light walking. It didn't matter - they were comfortable right from the start! The sizing was perfect - something I was apprehensive about with online purchasing. They fit my medium volume feet well, and were true to size of other athletic/hiking shoes and boots I have worn. I used them in sub zero temperatures climbing Mt Washington (NH) this winter (with a 40lb pack) and they performed beautifully with crampons and without. They will get another test this spring on Mt Rainier. For the money, this is the best all-around boot out there!

"Lite" Hiking Boots
I have no real basis for comparison, having only recently taken up the serious hiking sport. I will say that these are very well made boots, but not for basic trekking. They are for rugged hikes and mountainous terrain and that is why I bought them.

I like them - except for the uppers.
I have worn them a few times now. Overall the feeling is a super-cushy boot with a sturdy toe and heel. A couple problems made me consider returning them. Out of the box there was some obvious quality control problems with the uppers. On one of the boots, along where the lace hooks are attached, the inner plastic which gives it structure does not go much past the end of the hooks and so there is not a nice defined tongue fold, it just kind of accordions together, even when making an effort to do it neatly. The tongue and upper in general are too mushy, the inner liner gets small folds in it. Ankle support is OK for my worthless ankles; for such a high boot, you'd think it would be better. The oversized locking hooks at the inner hinge of the ankle can dig in and get somewhat painful going diagonally up 35+(?) degree slabs when you are keeping your heel low. Thicker socks seemed to help. They seem quite roomy, even with heavy socks I had plenty of wiggle room, almost too much. I ordinarily get my street shoes a tad oversized and got these at my regular size. I could wear 2 pairs of socks and a liner with them, which can be good for winter. That's what I do with my old-style Makalus. The big sticky front toe rand and the heel cup (counter)are sweet and the soles are very soft. There is maybe a half shank but alot of structural bits that make it seem like a little more. They are light compared to my old-version Makalus, I can actually run with them on and feels great. The new Makalus are only about 2 oz heavier. I got them because they are cheap, to burn up on regular peakbag workouts around Tahoe. If more socks and/or lacing techniques does it for me, I won't trade them in for new Makalus.

SM Lites Rock
I love these shoes. Great traction and all around comfort make this a perfect shoe for the weekend mountaineer.

salomen sm lite
Great boots, it only took a couple of long walks to break them in but now they fit like a pair of slippers. Just like to say that the service from this site was faultless, could have bought them from my local outdoor shop here in England but much cheaper from you guys. Will use you again. Many thanks.

Training Tips

Cross training gives your body a chance to recover while still exercising.  If yesterday has a hard run day up and down hills, then today's bicycle ride gives your aching knees a well deserved break.

Anaeroic threshold is when lactic acid starts to build up in your body as your muscles are not getting the oxygen they require.  This threshold is typically expressed as a percentage of your VO2 max - the amount of oxygen per kilogram of weight that a person can use in converting fuel to energy. Elite athletes threshold might be as high as 90% of VO2 max.

Efficient running position allows you to run farther and faster.  Keep the heel raise to a minimum, relax your upper body and hands, keep your upper body poised and quiet.

If you want to make progess in your training, join a running group.  A commitment to meet on a regular basis with a group of like minded individuals will help you keep your focus.
