Salomon Expert Mid GTX - Men's

The Salmon Expert Mid GTX is a mid-cut light hiker that provides protection and support to tackle terrain from the street to the trail. The Gore-Tex lining is breathable and waterproof—perfect for keeping your feet dry on muddy trails, in puddles, or through shallow stream crossings. The stiff chassis is designed to offer excellent push through protection, torsional rigidity, and forefoot flex while reducing the overall weight of the shoe. What that all amounts to is more energy, more control, and more comfort for your feet, whether you’re slogging around town in the rainy Northwest or tackling a quick day hike. Clothed in full grain nubuck and split suede leather, the Expert Mid GTX is both supple and supportive. A protective rubber toe and heel wrap helps keep painful toe-stubs to a minimum. Salomon’s one pull lacing system makes taking these shoes off and on as easy as an oversized, unlaced skateboard shoe.

Salomon
I've own and worn several pair of Salomon boots in the past, so that's what prompted me to try the Salomon Expert Mid hikers. I was also looking for a light hiker with Gore-Tex or Gore-Tex XCR. This boot does not stack up to Salomons past shoes. My previous Exit Mid boots were the best but did not have Gore. In comparison, the Expert Mid boots feel very cheap and run very, very wide providing a sloppy fit. The materials feel more like a Wal-Mart hiker than a Salomon. I love my old Salomon boots and am left to wonder......

Excellent Out of the Box Hiker
2 days after purchasing the Expert Mid GTX boot I was in the middle of the Adirondak mountains. The boots were literally out of the box and in use, a no-no when doing serious hiking. The fit was excellent and remained snug during the week. I originally wanted the non Gore-Tex version but I do not regret paying the extra now. I continue to wear the boots for my work which is a lot of outside work. They still have a rigid yet forgiving feel. I will purchase another pair maybe even before these need to be replaced.

good and bad
These boots are ready to go right out of the box. It is not a padded inside, soft boot but it does fit well and I wore it for 4 days straight without any problem. For a boot that is 'stiff' it is comfortable without breaking in. It is well built like my last pair of Salomon's. The bad is that the laces slip when tied and have to be redone now and then. The ugly is the Contragrip sole is not good on ice or packed snow. Very slipery! The grip on dry stuff is very good though. Same as my last pair of Salomon's. Overall, buy 'em for three season use.

Great bag
Hi We use this bag for the guides and its great, tons of room, very light and good pockets on the side for bottles. The hydration pocket is well designed. A real winner.

Training Tips

Proper hydration for a run includes drinking 30 - 45 minutes before you start and about a cup every 10 - 15 minutes while running.

One of the best ways to win a running race is to win it in your mind first.  Visualize yourself running and winning that important race.  The more often you do this, you will start to "feel" the race.  Your heart will get pumping and your body will feel the effort required to get the job done.

Be serious about getting and staying in shape.  Create a written plan that outlines the steps you are taking and the expected result by a certain date.  Review your plan frequently and adjust as necessary.  Do what it takes to get what you want.

Buy running gear made with performance fabrics - Supplex, Coolmax, Lycra, Goretex - that allow for full range of motion.
