Vasque Catalyst Approach Shoe - Men's
The Vasque Catalyst is a high-performance approach shoe that's perfectly suited to 5.2 scrambling, use as a light trail hiker, and everyday urban missions. Starting from the bottom up, the Catalyst features the famous Stealth sticky rubber found in Five Ten's climbing shoes. The highest friction rubber available, Stealth's unique compounds allow you to grip the trail or rock like no other material, while providing maximum shock absorption on the go. Integrated components throughout the midsole provide incredible support: a nylon shank provides both flex and stiffness, and a tri-density compression molded EVA midsole is softer under the forefoot, stiffest on the outside of the heel to prevent pronation, and supportive under the heel for optimal durability. A high-quality contoured EVA footbed provides a supportive arch and heel cup that frankly blows other stock footbeds out of the water. The Catalyst's upper combines highly breathable nylon mesh with sturdy Nubuck and Split leather, while lacing that extends to the toe provides a precise climbing-shoe style fit. A medium forefoot fit accommodates foot swelling during exercise, while a tight heel provides maximum performance.

Sticky rubber has ups and downs Great on rock, garbage on ice. These things are extremely comfy. I wear them on a daily basis as my kick around shoes. The sticky rubber provides great traction PROVIDED that what you're walking on isn't cold. When cold, the rubber's traction is rubbish. Don't even try these things on ice. That being said, everywhere else they're fantastic. They fit my high arches decently, and give nice cradling. The insoles and tread are pretty ordinary, nothing amazing but nothing terrible either. To summarize - These are killer in canyon country or as bum around shoes, not so hot for winter usage.
Vasque hiking shoes are worth the little extra I was looking for a pair of light-weight hiking shoes to use in tandem with my Vasque Clarions and these shoes fit the bill perfectly. After replacing the standard insoles with Superfeet insoles, I have logged around 30 miles on the new Catalyst's and they are great! No blisters, no pain, and they stick to slippery rocks like glue. Make sure you are a little more cautious about twisting your ankle (versus traditional boots), and you will enjoy these shoes for many, many miles.
