Jansport Syncline 38 Backpack - 2350 cu in

For its wide range of uses and its solid design, you can't beat the Syncline as a mid-capacity outdoor pack. Sporting compression straps that keep the load close to you, watertight zippers, a padded hipbelt and removable sternum strap, this pack carries it all, carries it well, and keeps you comfortable all the while. A frame sheet and lightweight aluminum stay helps the Jansport Syncline to carry heavier loads up to short overnighters. Wicking alpine mesh on the backpanel carries moisture away from your back diminishing the dreaded wet spot, and a hydration-ready pocket and port will easily accept Jansport's Water Tower reservoir. The organizer pocket with keyper ensures a locksmith isn't in your future.

Great midsize loaner pack!
The Jansport Syncline 38 is a great basic small pack that I purchased to use as a "loaner" pack for friends I take backpacking. At 2350 ci many consider it just a daypack. However, as a lightweight backpacker, I find that it is plenty big for the gear I pack for my novice friends to carry - ultralight down sleeping bag, tent fly and poles, water, food and extra clothing. Personally, I could use the Syncline 38 as a 3-4 day pack. It is lightweight and one of the smaller packs to include a framesheet and stay to distribute the load to the hips. Unlike many backpacks, the Syncline 38 is equipped with the storage organization options I think are important - water bottle pockets and enough other pockets for storing clothing, rain gear, food, flashlights, etc. I compared a lot of similar sized daypacks (North Face Big Shot, Marmot Talus, Lowe Alpine Powder Peak, North Face Terra 40, Kelty Redwing 2400 & 2650) to find a small pack with a lot of features at a good value to use as a loaner pack for my friends. The Jansport Syncline 38 is perfect!

Great Backpack for the Price
The Syncline 38 backpack I have is used mainly for school (I need a backpack that I can carry all day comfortably.) I have used it for light backpacking, travel, school. I would take time to look at the ARCTERYX packs they are a bit more expensive but their quality is unsurpassed. Overall this is a good pack especially for the price.

Roomy, comfy, useful
Very well put together; the waist belt transfers the load to your hips. The pack has just the right number of compartments and the side pockets hold liter-size bottles. The v-loft pocket is great for wallet, notepad; and also holds a Jansport water tower. Just the right size for one or two day use.

Solid, comfortable day pack and more
Used this as a day pack/hand luggage on a recent trip to Africa, including climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, and it worked very well. Pack was comfortable w/ ample padding, yet not too heavy. Lots of pockets for easy access to stuff. My only wish was if it had bungee cord on the back to be able to lash bulkier stuff like shoes to the back of it. Highly recommended.

Training Tips

When buying a new pair of running shoes, bring your old ones with you.  You will get a better fit if you know if you supinate or pronate.

Heart monitors are useful for knowing when you are in the right zone for your training efforts.  If you understand what your maximum heart rate is, you can set up your monitor to beep at you when you exceed the high or low range of your heart rate for the type of workout you are doing.

Cross training gives your body a chance to recover while still exercising.  If yesterday has a hard run day up and down hills, then today's bicycle ride gives your aching knees a well deserved break.

Anaeroic threshold is when lactic acid starts to build up in your body as your muscles are not getting the oxygen they require.  This threshold is typically expressed as a percentage of your VO2 max - the amount of oxygen per kilogram of weight that a person can use in converting fuel to energy. Elite athletes threshold might be as high as 90% of VO2 max.
