Ortovox D1 Doggy Transmitter

The Ortovox D1 Doggy Transmitter will give your avy-mutt the same measure of protection as you have. Your dog is giving you the huge sad eyes again. He wants to play too. Granted, the D1 only has a transmit mode, but your dog lacks opposable thumbs, and has a pretty effective tracking unit mounted at the front of his head. Because it doesn't need a receive function, the D1 is tons smaller than your beacon, so it fits unobtrusively on the dog's collar, preventing him from scratching it off.

Not Even Close...
It did not come with any straps. It has a tiny slit in the back that you are supposed to thread the dogs collar through. Yet, nobody makes a collar that will fit through this slit. Most collars these days have clips so they can go on and off the dog easy. If the idea is to attach this to a collar, Ortovox needs to make some sort of clip that can screw on and off the transmitter so it can actually attach to a collar. Better off getting your dog a used transceiver. I'm sending mine back.

Bravo to Ortovox
The crew at Ortovox should be commended for producing this item. As an avalanche search and rescue dog team, this piece of equipment is invaluable to our K9 partners. Our dogs are highly trained and have needed the extra measure of protection afforded thier human partners. Great work Ortovox, keep it up!!

Beacons are for people
I love my dog, but would never forgive myself if my dog or someone else's dog was rescued before a person. Frankly, I am surprised that Ortovox produces such a thing.

not well thought out
So, I've actually considered building something like this, but Ortho has done it in a pretty boneheaded manner. Why not use the old (obsolete) beacon frequency (I think it was 14 kHz) for your dog, that way, if you are out with the family, and your wife, dog and child get buried, you can choose not to search for your dog (I love my dogs, but I think if my partner would know that I'll be digging out my dog first if both get buried, I'll have to ski alone.)

Think about it
I like the idea of a doggy transmitter, don't get me wrong, but maybe they shouldn't function on the same frequency as that of the people beacons. Here's my moral problem, if I found my dogs before my partner(s) and they didn't make it, I might have a hard time living with the decision to put a beacon on my dog.

Training Tips

For runners looking to get the maximum benefit from hill training, as you sprint to the top of the hill have your arms pumping faster and faster.  Once you get to the top, continue on increasing your speed as much as possible.

After each interval, take your pulse rate by counting the number of beats at your wrist or neck for 15 seconds.  Multiply that result by four to get your beats per minute.  Your next interval should start before your heart rate is less than 60% of your maximum.

The four components of good fitness include flexibility, muscular endurance, muscular strength, and cardiorespiratory endurance.  For optimum health, include at least two of these groups in three workouts per week.

Your fitness level will improve by overloading, working your body hard enough to stimulate the body, progression, increasing the frequency, intensity, and duration of exercise over time, and regularity, working out frequently, at least three times a week.
