Scarpa Denali XT Alpine Touring Boot

The Denali XT isn’t a boot for the faint of heart—it’s a four-buckle, superbly stiff footlocker created for full-on power skiing. This year the unflinching Denali XT is over a pound lighter thanks to a new, custom-moldable liner, and it sports micro-adjustable buckles for a precise, accurate fit. Scarpa uses their stiffest Pebax on this boot for total energy transfer from leg to ski. The Denali XT drives the fattest of boards without breaking a sweat, and isn’t thrown off by crud or choppy hardpack. For the uphill, this boot has a cuff-release and hinged tongue for long, comfortable strides. Skiers who crank it up on the downhill and those who are making the transition from Alpine to AT will want to get their feet in the Denali XT.

Good fit, good control
I've had them for a couple of weeks and used them three times so far. The thermo liners are amazing: once baked and fitted, they really acquire the contours of the foot well, especially right around all the tendons and bones in the ankle. The stock foot bed is foam junk. I still need to upgrade this component. The buckles and straps are secure, and the tension can be varied from walkable to death grip. Note that the foot/ankle angle is exactly 90 deg, which differs from the slight forward lean of alpine and Garmont boots. They are much lighter than I expected: 1800g per boot.

Denali XT with Thermo Liner
Wow, these boots rock!!! Loosen em up and unlock the flex to hike and skin in relative comfort. Then when it's time to descend, lock em down and they are almost as stiff as my Salomon Equipe race boots!!! The difference is that these boots are half the weight and comfortable. If steeps and trees are your domain, take these boots with you.

Boots were sent quickly and efficiently. Vic loves his new boots! We'll be using them in Sequoia Nat'l forest.

Training Tips

If you want to make progess in your training, join a running group.  A commitment to meet on a regular basis with a group of like minded individuals will help you keep your focus.

An efficient long distance running stride will have you landing on your heal first and rolling to the front of your toes.

One of the most mentally toughening things you can do as a runner who trains daily is to add a morning run into your routine.  This means you are doing two runs a day.  The morning run is simply more of a mental challenge then anything else.

Have two pairs of running shoes, especially if you live in a wet climate.  Consider replacing your shoes no later than 500 miles into the life of the shoes.
