The Fritschi Diamir Freerides do not come with Return Springs. You will need these if you want your skis to stay close to your foot on those kick turns when skinning uphill. If you have to break trail in deep powder the Return Springs will save you precious energy by keeping the ski close to your foot--energy you can then use to rip powder turns.

Fritschi return springs
These springs did exactly what they are designed to do. The question is, are they necessary? After a week of alpine touring and about 40,000 vertical feet, I can only think of one kick turn where I was aware that they helped. I had used my Freerides earlier this season without the springs and was aware of more than 1 occasion when I tried to get my ski to come back to me, using my pole or hand and generally cursing under my breath! It seems when they are there my sense is that I don't need them, but when they are not there, I wish they were?!? This may be an indication that they are a good enhancement to the Fritschi bindings. I'm trying to decide if these springs require more energy?? Am I fighting the springs with every stride??

Climb Spring Fritschi
The climb spring makes the kick turn possible now with little effort, keeping the ski much closer to the bottom of the boot. Also coming around corners traversing the steep it gives more control of the ski. My friend with Naxo bindings said his next binding will be Fritschi because Naxo does not have the spring--all else on both bindings being about the same.

Should be standard
These springs are essential for kick turns. If you plan to do any climbing with freeride bindings you need these springs. If you don't you should get other bindings. They should be standard part of the package and not extras. It's not as if the bindings are very light anyway.

Huge Enhancement to Freeride Bindings
These return springs are a huge enhancement to my bindings. The most obvious improvement is in sidestepping, especially in deep snow. I no longer have to scoop my lower ski up with my pole, which can be especially difficult on a steep narrow section. Kick turns are much easier as well since I no longer have to snap the ski up to keep it above the snow. I've used them in many conditions and have found no disadvantages. I think they should come on the bindings at the factory.

Wish freerides came stock with return springs. An essential piece of the puzzle while on the skin track. They keep your skis closer to your foot while doing kick turns. They make life a lot easier in deep snow.

Training Tips

You can increase your maximum oxygen consumption by approximately 15% when you work out three times a week for at least 30 minutes at 70% of your maximum heart rate.

Low weight, high rep circuit training combines the best of both worlds: aerobic and anaerobic training.  Keeping the rest time in between high repeats low excercises like bench press, leg presses, inclined sit-ups, and upright rows is the key to maximum benefits.

As a long distance runner, a gradual increase in distance each week will allow you to build a solid areobic base.  Distance increase should be no more than 10% of the previous week's distance.

When buying a new pair of running shoes, bring your old ones with you.  You will get a better fit if you know if you supinate or pronate.
