Salomon Pocket Rocket Alpine Ski

The Salomon Pocket Rocket has made quite a name for itself among today's freeriders. The space-age graphics make you stop and gawk but its performance on the hill is what's most impressive. With tip-waist-tail measurements that dwarf traditional fat skis, and its typical Salomon soft flex, this ski makes an incredible powder tool and excellent touring ski. Whether you're looking for something to float through Utah's light fluff, or turn around Telluride's steep bumps, the Pocket Rocket has the ammo. If gettin' jibby with it is your M.O., the twin tips will help you land facing either direction, letting you take your new school skills to new heights.

Rockets
I'm a hardcore park skier but with the crowds coming in I looked elsewhere on the mtn to explore. These skis cover every part of the mountain: from pow to crud to the park. They rock. I've used these skis in park comps as well as skier cross races and have placed in both. Hands-down best ski ever produced.

Fat and Fun
This is a great powder ski and is damn good in the backcountry for touring. The tip is soft so when you are skinning in deep powder the tip rises up and makes for easy trail breaking. And when it's time to come down the smile gets even bigger. Just a great powder ski.

The best over all ski
This ski takes care of it all. If you are a new school skier and love jumps, this will be the tool for you. It is twin tipped for tricks but also fat for powder. This ski will take you farther than you can imagine. If the season is winding down and the snow is becoming wet and slow it won't matter—they will keep their speed so you can fly through the air.

OK for lighter skiers.
I demoed this ski at Crested Butte for two days and wasn't impressed. Initially, I was floored by how light these things are. Then, I realized that a lot of snap, stiffness, and power has been bred out of the ski in order to make it the most forgiving powder board on the mountain. I'm not suprised that it didn't make it above 75% in Ski Press World's review - the skiers in their test probably bent this thing in half. The PR is a very, very light and flexy ski. In this, it excels at trees and quick turns, as well as steep bumps. However, these characteristics make it very, very nervous on hardpack. It's not torsionally rigid at all. However, it is quite damp, making it OK at crud-busting. This is not by any means a big-mountain ski. Try this: if you stand and place the tail of the PR between your feet placed together, you can twist the tip of the PR almost 90 degrees with little effort. All of these characteristics make it a ski that should not be ridden by anyone over 155 lbs - I'm completely serious. The 185 length is dangerous - there's just too little ski there to be stable in that length. If you're under this weight limit and are a finesse skier looking for a set of light, forgiving boards, then these may be for you.

I don't get it
I really wanted to like these skis but found myself very disappointed. Skied the 185s for two days in and OB at Jackson. In my 6' 2

Training Tips

Efficient running position allows you to run farther and faster.  Keep the heel raise to a minimum, relax your upper body and hands, keep your upper body poised and quiet.

If you want to make progess in your training, join a running group.  A commitment to meet on a regular basis with a group of like minded individuals will help you keep your focus.

An efficient long distance running stride will have you landing on your heal first and rolling to the front of your toes.

One of the most mentally toughening things you can do as a runner who trains daily is to add a morning run into your routine.  This means you are doing two runs a day.  The morning run is simply more of a mental challenge then anything else.
